The date has been set, the posters are up, the training tapered for the big day; our second Sporting 100 will take place on the 31.01.2010. It will follow a slightly modified route from last year so winter woolies should be included in Santa letters. (Granted if the flooding continues as it has been wetsuits and weelies might be more appropriate.) The event will start at 10am, Sign on 9am onwards and finish in the Geraldine O Hanrahan GAA grounds on the outskirts of New Ross. And after all that.... The route was changed at the last minute to at 77km out and back route to the Rosslare Roundabout just outside Wexford and back due to Safety reasons. There was no Thaw.. Thankfully it went off safely with a great turnout of 124 riders taking to the road. Thanks to everyone again and's here's to a return of the original route next year.. To get to the start take the ring road around New Ross and if coming from a northern direction follow the N30 up hill until you get to A Topaz Filling station on your left and take an immediate left turn. The start is on your right hand side. If coming from a southern direction again Take the N30 and go through a set of traffic lights and when you see a Topaz garage on your right take the turn off before the junction to the start. There is ample parking and showers as well as refreshments provided before and after the event.
Below is a map of the route. Its 102km in total.
Its an undulating route
It heads out of New Ross on the main Enniscorthy road (N30) then taking quiet roads via Rathgarogue to Ballywilliam and Rathnure and on to Killane, famed for a ballad of Kelly, the boy from Killane!. There is a lovely monument dedicated to the seven brothers. You will be turning right just at the monument.
From here its lovely scenic route via Castleboro as seen below with around 28km completed
Shortly after this we turn right when we get to the N30 again after 33km covered. The route heads up to Clonroche, taking a left in the middle of the village. Beware of the road surfaces along this next stretch over to Adamstown and on towards the main N25. You're half way there now. The route goes into some nice narrow roads passing through Cullenstown Horetown and on to Wellingtonbridge after approx 60km. There will be a mobile stop around here for those needing refreshments. On towards Duncannon on what's known as the "New Line" heading towards the sea and entering Duncannon with its Historic Fort. Rising out of the Village you can see a lovely view of the Waterford Estuary and the Ballyhack to Passage East Car Ferry After decending into Arthurstown take a right at the bottom the hill with 79km completed. The route then passes by the ancient Dunbrody Abbey and close to John F. Kennedy Park
The route then drops into New Ross passing Kelly's woods. At the T junction take the right turn up the hill on the ring road, turning left at the temporary roundabout, through the traffic lights and right at the Topaz garage to finish where refreshments and warm showers are provided An online map of the route is here http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/new%20ross/282126444490865092
